Slot.it McLaren F1 GTR FINA

by Wingless Wonder, Wednesday, April 9, 2008 22:41

Fast Facts:
Weight: 77 grams
Stock Magnetic Downforce: 300 grams (3.90 magnifier)
Motor: Slot.it V12/3 21,500 RPM

Slot.it has done a lot of great cars through the years, and I'm happy to have a few myself. The FINA McLaren was first announced in 2006, and even then I was eyeing it as a particularly nice car. I'm glad to see that it took some time to come out, because in recent months Slot.it has gone entirely over to the V12/3 motor in all of their new cars. I fell in love with this motor driving the Clarion Nissan R390, and I'm happy it's in this car.

The McLaren is a sleek car and sits low to the track, aided by an offset motor pod. It has good, solid stick out of the box and turned in some fun laps, hanging out the tail some in the turns but producing consistent laps of under six seconds. The final top lap was a 5.761.

After basic setup (truing tires, oil/grease, run in motor), I decided to give it a little extra stick with a second "C" magnet in the pocket just in front of the motor. As with most Slot.it's I've worked with, this involved shaving a little to clear space for the magnet to seat properly. Once in place, the car stuck extremely well with these two magnets alone, reaching a top speed of 4.735, with laps consistently under five seconds. The car would still kick out its tail some in the turns and if you tried to carry too much speed in the turns it'll come off with some spectacular rolls.

Unmodified Time: 5.761
Race-Tuned Time: 4.735
